Location: [Office Location]

About Us

Plumbing, Piping & Construction, Inc. (PPC) is an established commercial mechanical contracting company serving the construction industry since 1973. We specialize in plumbing, piping, and HVAC construction, delivering complex projects through experienced teams, strong coordination, and attention to detail.

We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and motivated Project Engineer with experience working for a commercial construction contractor to support our Project Management team.

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of construction project workflows, experience working with construction-specific ERP systems, and the ability to manage multiple active projects simultaneously.

This position requires someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities, communicates effectively, thinks critically, and actively identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and processes.

Key Responsibilities

Project Submittals & Documentation

  • Review construction drawings, project specifications, and contract documents to identify required material and equipment submittals.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Estimators to ensure proposed materials and equipment align with project requirements, approved estimates, and project scope.
  • Gather technical documentation from manufacturers, vendors, and suppliers, including product data, equipment specifications, shop drawings, and other required materials.
  • Prepare comprehensive, accurate, and professionally organized submittal packages for customer review and approval.
  • Manage the entire submittal process, including initial preparation, submission, tracking, revisions, resubmissions, and final approval.
  • Proactively coordinate with General Contractors, customers, vendors, and internal personnel to resolve comments, obtain approvals, and prevent unnecessary delays.
  • Identify potential discrepancies, missing information, or approval delays and communicate them promptly to the appropriate Project Manager.
  • Maintain accurate submittal logs and organized project documentation.

Material Purchasing & Procurement

  • Coordinate material and equipment purchasing based on project requirements, approved submittals, and Project Manager direction.
  • Prepare, process, and track purchase orders through the company's construction ERP system.
  • Communicate with suppliers and vendors regarding pricing, material availability, manufacturing lead times, and delivery schedules.
  • Monitor outstanding purchase orders and proactively follow up to ensure materials arrive when required.
  • Track changes in delivery dates and provide timely updates to Project Managers regarding potential impacts on project schedules.
  • Identify procurement challenges and assist in developing practical solutions to minimize project delays.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records and ensure procurement information is current within the ERP system.

Project Coordination & Construction ERP Management

  • Utilize the company's construction ERP system, ProContractor, for purchasing, project tracking, documentation, and related administrative functions.
  • Support multiple Project Managers across numerous active commercial construction projects simultaneously.
  • Coordinate with Estimators, Project Managers, suppliers, subcontractors, and customers to facilitate efficient project execution.
  • Maintain accurate and organized project records and ensure critical information is readily accessible.
  • Monitor outstanding action items, deadlines, material requirements, and project milestones.
  • Provide consistent, proactive updates regarding submittal approvals, procurement status, and potential scheduling concerns.

Organization, Problem-Solving & Process Improvement

  • Independently manage competing priorities and deadlines across multiple active projects.
  • Demonstrate accountability and follow assigned responsibilities through to completion without requiring constant supervision.
  • Anticipate potential challenges and proactively address issues before they escalate.
  • Apply critical thinking and sound judgment when navigating technical requirements, administrative processes, and project-related challenges.
  • Evaluate existing workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and communication.
  • Suggest and help implement practical process improvements.
  • Collaborate effectively with Project Managers and other team members while maintaining individual accountability.
  • Adapt to changing priorities while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and attention to detail.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience working directly for a commercial construction contractor , preferably a mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, piping, electrical, or similar specialty trade contractor.
  • Hands-on experience with construction-specific ERP or project management software used for project administration, purchasing, job costing, procurement, or related construction workflows.
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction processes, project documentation, and coordination between office personnel, field operations, and suppliers.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and navigate construction drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage numerous active projects and competing deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and solve problems without constant direction.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Important Experience Distinction: This position requires experience with commercial construction project operations and construction-specific software. Experience limited to general accounting, payroll, bookkeeping, service dispatch, or platforms such as QuickBooks and ADP does not satisfy the construction ERP experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Project Engineer, Project Coordinator, Assistant Project Manager, or similar role within commercial construction.
  • Experience working for a commercial mechanical, plumbing, piping, HVAC, or electrical contractor.
  • Direct experience preparing, submitting, tracking, and obtaining approval of construction submittal packages.
  • Experience coordinating material and equipment procurement, purchase orders, and supplier lead times.
  • Familiarity with construction ERP platforms such as ProContractor, Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate, CMiC, or comparable construction-specific systems .
  • Experience with ProContractor is strongly encouraged and considered a significant advantage, but is not required.
  • Understanding of construction project schedules, contract documents, procurement requirements, and coordination with General Contractors.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who understands the pace, complexity, and accountability involved in commercial construction.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, resourceful, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing a substantial volume of work across multiple projects.

We value individuals who can think independently, recognize problems before they become larger issues, and take the initiative to find solutions.

This is not simply a position for processing paperwork or entering information into a computer system. The Project Engineer plays an important role in keeping projects moving forward by ensuring submittals are approved, materials are ordered and tracked, and Project Managers have the information they need to make timely decisions.

Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities change, deadlines matter, and communication is essential.

We also value individuals who recognize inefficient processes and are willing to suggest and help implement better ways of accomplishing tasks.

Work Schedule & Location

This is a full-time, 100% on-site position, Monday through Friday. Remote and hybrid work arrangements are not available.

Regular in-person collaboration with Project Managers, Estimators, and administrative personnel is an essential part of this position.
